Iowa State University TESL Certificate Program

This convenient, one-year certificate will prepare you to teach English to speakers of other languages. After completing this four-course program, students wishing to pursue a graduate degree in TESL/Applied Linguistics (MA) or Applied Linguistics & Technology (PhD) at Iowa State University may apply credits from certificate courses towards these programs. Although the TESL Certificate program does not grant endorsement to teach in the State of Iowa, some TESL Certificate courses can be applied toward a K-12 Endorsement for the State of Iowa.

ESL Endorsement Waiver Info

In 2008, the ESL endorsement grandfather clause allowing any teacher who was licensed prior to October 1, 1988 to teach ESL without a current ESL endorsement was removed with the provision that, starting July 1, 2012, every ESL/SEI teacher, regardless of when licensed, is required to hold a valid ESL endorsement (endorsement #104). Those previously teaching ESL/SEI under that grandfather clause may now through June 1, 2012, apply for an ESL endorsement waiver through the state BoEE. Please check out the requirements for this waiver to see if you could qualify on the basis of your ESL teaching and training experience.
